This page describes how to manually activate products. With this method, you'll need to run commands on each machine - and for each software package - during the 30 day grace period after installation. If you are using virtual machines for testing and cross-compatibility on Macintosh computers, you'll need to use the manual method in those circumstances.

KMS activation can be blocked by a firewall. Please be sure that any firewalls between the client machine and the KMS server are open to incoming and outgoing traffic on TCP port 1688.

To use this method, first install the software (Windows or Microsoft Office). As part of that process you'll be informed that you have 30 days to activate the product. Complete the steps below during that 30-day period.

This method assumes that Windows or Office has never been activated on this machine before. If your machine had previously been activated with the earlier MAK activation method, please instead follow the instructions to switch from MAK to KMS activation.

Activate a Windows Operating System (All Supported Versions)

1. Open an Elevated Command Prompt window. For instructions, please see our guide How To Open an Elevated Command Prompt.
2. In the elevated Command Prompt window, verify that the current directory is C:WindowsSystem32. If it is not, type
   CD WindowsSystem32
   and press .
3. Type the following command:
   cscript slmgr.vbs /skms kms01.cit.cornell.edu
   and press .
   (Note: The url in the command above begins with kay-emm-ess-zero-one.)
4. Type the following command:
   cscript slmgr.vbs /ato
   and press .
5. Close the Command Prompt window.

And you're done for that installation of Windows on that computer.

Activate Desktop Edition of Microsoft Office 2016

1. Open an Elevated Command Prompt window. For instructions, please see our guide How To Open an Elevated Command Prompt.
2. Type
   CD Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice16
   then press .
   This assumes you installed Office in the default location.
   Note: If you installed the 32-bit version of Office on a 64-bit system, use this command instead:
   CD Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice16
3. Type
   cscript ospp.vbs /sethst:kms01.cit.cornell.edu
   then press . (Note: The url in the command above begins with kay-emm-ess-zero-one.)
4. Type
   cscript ospp.vbs /act
   then press .
5. Close the command prompt window.

And you're done for that installation of Office on that computer.

At this time, we recommend that Cornell faculty and staff use the Office 365 Pro Plus edition of Microsoft Office for their Cornell-provided and personally-owned computers. Please check with your local department's IT support provider before attempting to install Microsoft software onto your Cornell-provided computer. Your department may have have different recommendations.

Eligibility

Cornell University has a separate license for the Volume License Edition Microsoft Office. The Volume License Edition is a distinct version of Office that has fewer features and is not updated as frequently as the Office 365 edition. This edition is best suited for departments that enforce version control via a managed desktop service, or for computers that are not assigned to a specific customer, such as shared-use machines, kiosks, and computers in public-use labs.
We strongly recommend that you work with your local department IT support provider before installing any software onto your Cornell-provided computer.
The Volume Licensed Edition of Microsoft Office s authorized only for installation onto Cornell-owned computers.
The license covers the following versions of Office:

• Office Standard 2019 for Macintosh
• Office Professional Plus 2016 for Windows
• Office Standard 2016 for Macintosh

Previous versions of Office are no longer generally available under Cornell's license. If you have a specific business need to use an earlier version of an Office desktop application, please contact Software Licensing and we will do our best to work with you to find an appropriate solution.

Product Activation

Office should activate automatically as soon as your machine connects to the Internet via an on-campus local area network. All Cornell local area networks provided by CIT, and most networks provided by local IT providers are configured for KMS. If you are on a local area network that isn't configured for KMS, you can activate via KMS manually.

If you need to activate Office Professional Plus on a computer that cannot connect to our KMS server, such as for a computer that will not be connected to the Internet, please contact us to request an MAK product key. Please include the reason why KMS isn't appropriate for your situation.

Virtual Machines

The Campus Desktop Agreement covers installation of Office onto an arbitrary number of Virtual Machines (VMs). The license covers VMs running on hardware owned by Cornell University. For services hosted by third-party vendors under contract with Cornell University (such as Amazon Web Services), please visit our technical information page, Microsoft Licensing within AWS for details or contact Cornell's Cloud Team for licensing specifics.
